The idea is to film two (or more) videos where the subjects move through a similar sequence, and then interleave the frames to create a superposition of the two subjects where their identities blur together into one.

I have another, much more artfully choreographed artifact from this project that’s not fit for the public internet; you’ll need to track me down IRL to see it. Hoping to revisit this soon and make another cut that can be more accessible.

As a final project for the Gray Area Creative Code Intensive last year, I wanted to make something that explored how user interfaces create mappings between parameter spaces. That’s essentially what a user interface is: buttons, dials, switches, etc define an input parameter space that gets translated into an output parameter space, such as pixels on a screen. What kind of parameter spaces have interesting “shapes” to link together? What kind of user interface could I build that would be unexpected, dynamic, yet intuitive?

My parents told me that when I was a toddler I loved playing with those spring door stops. So now that I have a little human of my own, I thought I’d make something to share that joy.

Video Mosaic

A video comprised of a grid of smaller videos.

The above is one of my first passes at this idea. It certainly works as a proof of concept for the idea, but I’d like to improve on the aesthetics. Beyond the code to get get this working, the look and feel could be tuned by adjusting the dimensions of the video grid and the choice of reference videos. This version looks too “busy” for my liking. I think an improved version would use a simpler master video, like low-res pixel art, which evolves slowly. This would allow for the pixel videos to be larger and more stable, and thus more coherent.

Make some giant bubbles

Set up point lights near the bubbles, like a strand of fairy lights

Take photos of the bubbles with a long exposure so that points of light reflected on the undulating bubble’s surface becomes lines of light in the photograph.

Gaze in amazement

I fantasized about stepping into a quiet, sound-insulated box, the size of a phone booth with room for just me. And so the idea for the “Disco Coffin” was born as an art piece for the San Diego regional burn in 2019.
